The first loser is of course Bo Xilai who may have to spend
the rest of his life behind the bars. Some say that with
his status, he would be treated relatively well. But an easy
or harsh life is not a real concern to Bo Xilai.
What he concerns most? It's not wealth, nor power, but
an opportunity to accomplish great undertakings.
If you look at what he did in Chongqing
since 2007, you'll
realise the historical significance of his experiment. For
centuries, humanity has been struggling between two different
social-political-economic models: one is the capitalism that
could be relatively more efficient but definitely less fair,
and the another is socialism that could achieve better fairness
but often lacks efficiency. Bo Xilai thus was seeking a way
to turn the constrain that holds each other back into a driving
force stimulating a synchronised advancement. Had he succeeded,
the new development model could liberate the mankind from
the century-long dilemma that prompted endless revolutions
and wars within the nations and between the countries.
When someone was working on such a monumental program,
even just had a chance to do some experiment, whether he
succeeds or not, his contribution to the human civilisation
Unless Bo Xilai was a fool, he must understood clearly
the colossal implication of his Chongqing experiment. And
for a man who was about to alter the course of human civilisation
which could influence the world history for probably next
thousand years, do you seriously think he would care about
a position in China's Central Committee that lasts for five
to ten years?
Yet those goons, mutts, crookers and larrikins dominated
China's top political circle and engaged in the power rat
race are not equipped intellectually and morally to comprehend
this truth. They were terribly jealous of someone who could
make them look stupid and felt terrified that the new model
would shake the foundation of the world in which they have
privilege to enjoy fancy fair in high life. So they united
to drag Bo Xilai away from Chongqing and locked him up in
In this regard Bo Xilai is a loser. He lost his opportunity
to complete that great project. But apart from this, he triumphs
in all other grounds.
First of all, his legacy of Chongqing practice survives,
since its success is so startling like the sun in the sky
that his antagonists cannot deny its existence, and since
it reignites the hope among the socialists worldwide that
an efficient socialism is possible and worth to pursue.
The survival of the Chongqing legacy is also owing to Bo
Xilai's high profile avocation, which on the other hand became
the chief contributor to his downfall. It would be inconceivable
to assume that Bo Xilai did not comprehend the poisonous
nature of being conspicuous to his political career, but
he still decided to press on.
Why did he took this suicidal move? It is because, obviously,
this is the only way to let his practical vision of a sustainable
development model be known by the world, and it is
because, very likely, his personal political life never carried
much weight in his mind, and it might be also because he
knew the Chongqing model impairs the interest of the privileged
groups and he was under no illusion that his experiment would
have a chance to complete smoothly. He was racing with time
in a high profile mode in order to accomplish the task as
much as possible.
He wasn't able to finish his work before he was politically
assassinated and fell, but his Chongqing legacy has already
left its strong mark in history, which encourages his followers
to keep working on.
And secondly, Bo Xilai not only triumphs in political aspect,
but in legal field as well.
Prior to the "public trial" in Jinan, many people
entertained a possibility that this could be part of Xi Jinping's
strategy to clear up the trump-up accusations against Bo
Xilai, since everybody in his right mind - regardless he
is a legal professional or an utter layman, being a Chinese
resident or a foreign observer, leaning left or right - could
see clearly how week the evidences are. If a guilty verdict
could be reached based on such botched evidence, China's
legal system would certainly become a joke in the front of
the world. And there could be something even more damaging
than that: with a dangerous precedent set, no one in this
country will ever feel safe since anyone could be arbitrarily
convicted based solely on the verbal accusation from a family
member, a friend, or a colleague. And China, under such neo-fascist
legal system, will be transformed into a nation of terror.
Which is why September 22, 2013, was not really a day to
sentence Bo Xilai, but a day to deliver a verdict on China's
current leadership team and legal system.
Now the curtain of the drama has fallen and the audience
finally realised the spectacular development of the plot
in the courtroom was not planed by the producers in the Central
Committee but improvised by a creative and courageous Bo
Xilai. Initially, the courtroom scene was designed to convince
the public that Bo Xilai was indeed guilty. The tragedy is
those in the top leadership seriously undermined both Bo
Xilai's integrity and intelligence.
They expected Bo Xilai to plea guilty in exchange for a
lenient sentence which they hoped to help them disqualify
him as the spiritual leader of the new socialist movement
and further discredit the movement itself built upon the
Chongqing Experience. But once again, their attempt was defeated
before a man whose sight is beyond his personal circumstance
and his concern is fixed on his role in a collective endeavour
that is to usher in a new phase of human civilisation.
That is why Bo
Xilai's performance in courtroom, especially his
last statement, has captivated the world.
Yes, he did not get a chance to resume his grand program,
but he's gained an distinguished place in history which no
one else in today's Chinese political circle can ever dream
Under the shadow cast by Bo Xilai's towering figure, his
political antagonists are just a bunch of pathetic passing
notes in history.
