Song of A Prisoner
Author: General Ye Ting
Originally published on the
wall of a prison cell that was under joint administration
of Chiang Kai-Shek government and the US regime. The poem
later featured prominently in the novel, film and opera The
Red Rock depicting how the true Communists in Chongqing kept
their faith in a better China intact when facing arrest,
interrogation, torture, life imprisonment and even execution.
The door for man is shut,
The hole for dog is unlocked.
A sound screams:
Claw out and you'll be free.
I yearn for freedom,
But I understand a man's body
Must not claw through a hole for
I hope there comes the day,
When the earth erupts with blaze
That burns down the dark reign,
And I shall die to reborn in the flame.
