Beijing Opera: Injustice
to Dou E
Dou E by Zhang Huoding
Lady Dou E's proclamation to the world:
Dou E was a charming lady lived with her mother-in-law.
Thanks to the hard work exerted by entire family members
- including Dou E's late father-in-law and late husband -
in the previous decades, the two ladies had a bit spare money
to invest in private banking sector which somehow eventually
brought disaster upon them and destroyed their simple yet
It all began with a wrong investment decision made by the
mother-in-law. Without careful checking the credit history,
she granted a loan to a drug man. The head of a lousy drug
store shared the similar life philosophy with the head
of the magnificent White House on the other side of the
Pacific Ocean 700 years later, considering he could get away
with the debt by letting his great-great-great-great ....
great-grandson to repay the loan, despite he had no son
at all and didn't seem would ever have one. Therefore when
the mother-in-law went to collect the debt plus the interest,
the drug guy regarded the act as a vicious provocation and
tried to kill the old lady. Lucky the drug guy was subdued
by Old Zhang and his son Donkey Zhang who just happened to
pass by the scene.
Having saved the old lady, the pair immediately demanded
their reward - they pressed her to adopt an open door policy.
Dou E's mother-in-law was a foolish devotee of a cult
movement called Harmonious Jungle World and brainwashed to
having lost her will to defend her family territory thus
agreed to let the aliens colonize her household. When the
father and the son further proposed to jointly develop the
ladies' bedrooms respectively, which was part of their road
map towards the goal of controlling family's resource and
turn the native household members into their slaves, Dou
E was finally outraged into becoming an angry youth and launched
a fierce resistance campaign.
Donkey Zhang was very unsatisfied with the semi-colonization
situation and believed a radical political reform was urgently
needed, thus conspired to get rid of the household head,
Dou E's mother-in-law.
One day the old lady was not well so Dou E prepared special
lamb stew for her, which gave Donkey an opportunity to undertake
selective assassination by secretly dropping arsenic powder
who collected from the drug man into the soup.
But the old lady was once again saved by Old Zhang, only
this time it was unintentionally. When presented with the
stew by her daughter-in-law, she was too ill to drink so
invited Donkey's father to taste the delicacy for her. The
old man was poisoned and died immediately.
For saving her mother-in-law from the ordeal of being interrogated
and tortured, Dou E allowed herself to be wrongfully convicted
and sentenced to death by the corrupted magistrate. On her
way to the execution field, she declared her innocence to
the crowd, and swore that her innocence would be proven when
the dripping blood did not land on the ground; when snow
fell in the midsummer; and when drought struck this doomed
capital of Double Fat Cats.
A correspondence between the (Wo)Man and the Heaven was
quickly established and all of her three wishes were granted
thus the injustice done to her was bounced back to the perpetrators.
700 years later in the midsummer 2012, Chinese capital
Beijing once again witnessed
a brief snowfall, and a graceful and dignified lady was
once again wrongly accused of poisoning someone, all because
her husband refused to allow the aliens to further colonize
China. The difference is that this time the reincarnated Donkey
Zhang, Old Zhang, the drug man and the corrupted magistrates
have links to the top level offices in Beijing,
in Washington and
Injustice to Dou E was the best tragic drama created by
Guan Hanqing (关汉卿), the
best playwright in China's classic age, with his contribution
to China's opera
development equivalent to that of William Shakespeare
to the Western stage arts.
