About a little over a week after Osama
bin Laden is said to be dead, U.S. Congress began a
motion to escalate U.S. war against "terrorism".
But, why, America's
biggest "threat" is removed, isn't it?
Yes, however, “we cannot relax just because bin Laden is
no longer in the picture,” explained Rep. Mac Thornberry
from Texas. "Because, Al Qaeda is increasingly decentralized
and because some dangerous splinter groups aren’t obviously
connected to the 2001
attacks."
Well argued. But if the world indeed has become a more dangerous
place for our dearly frail and fragile American friends after
the death of Osama, it should be questioned whether president
Obama's killing of terrorist Osama is in fact for protecting
or harming American public. Since the answer seems to be
the latter which triggers the Congress to consider to escalate
the war, should Obama also be charged and persecuted for
the same crime that Osama is accused of?
For the bill being so foolishly aggressive and wickedly
vicious, even many Americans view it as a passage from the
Weimar Republic to Nazi Germany. It gives Obama and any successor
carte blanche to attack any individual or any nation without
further approval from Congress, which means US president
can declare war against any country or any person deemed
as opposing American
interest, justified or unjustified, real or trump up.
“Congress is involved in declaring, for the first time in
70 years, worldwide war,” Chris Anders, a legislative liaison
for the American Civil Liberties Union, points out.
A dangerous development in American politics as such has
prompted some truly patriotic cool heads to submit a petition
through Calgary4Paul last
week as they believe if this bill is passed it will not only
devastate the world but disunite the States.
The following is the main points in the petition:
Congress is about to vote on worldwide war authority.
This was long on the Bush administration's wish list. Now,
a few top congressional insiders see an opportunity to
sneak it in to a "must pass" piece of legislation:
the Defense Authorization bill.
This expanded war authority would give the president —
any president — the power to use military force, whenever
and however he or she sees fit. It would essentially declare
a worldwide war without end.
It is shocking that Congress is entertaining such legislation
at a time when many are looking to see an end to escalating
conflict and abuses of power in the name of fighting terrorism.
Hope those warmongers will be sent to face trial sooner
than later, along with Donald Rumsfeld, Dick
Cheney, the former CIA
director George Tenet and the formal U.S. president George
W Bush. (wsws.org:
