The world's most powerful spectrum survey telescope, the largest Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, has been built by Chinese from scratch. Located on the Swallow Mountain (燕山) in the outskirts of Beijing, the telescope aims at looking deep into the realm of heaven. Chinese scientists plan to get the spectrum data of 2.5 million stars, 2.5 million galaxies, 1.5 million ultra luminous and 1 million quasars, in just 3 to 5 years. The optical system is made of 3.6 meter caliber Schmidt corrector plate and 4.9 caliber spherical surface primary mirror, while the imaging focal surface is equipped with 4,000 optical fibers which can be adjusted to the best position automatically and is connected to 16 spectrometers for real time recording tasks, with a capacity to get up to 4,000 astronomical spectrums each night.
The central piece of this celestial-focused 007 is consisted of 24 pieces of hexagonal reflection mirrors, each of which measures 1.1 meter diagonal conjugate and 25mm thick, and is adjustable to different angles in order to point at celestial bodies at any locality in the sky. The Chinese super detective is expected to collect more than 10 million spectroscopic data on celestial bodies which will be shared with the international scientific community.
