The
United Efforts
24 February 2009
This is the most amazing eyewitness
account of a huge event. Through his camera lens, the
author known as 新洋, recorded and
reported, and is still recording and reporting to this
very day, the horrific catastrophe and incredible human response. The
following are the images edited from some of his photos
and English translation of the related notes:
1, Eyewitness Report through the Lens
2, The Rescue Efforts
3, The Tentative Recovery
4. The Support

June 2008

This is one of the numerous towns
and villages that have been reduced to piles of
rubble by the power of quake.

And the force of thunderstorm
further blew the survivors' temporary tents away.
"Last night, our whole family
were exposed to the downpour, and the big rain
continued for about 40 minutes; we were wet and
cold, but had no place to turn," a granny
tells me.

Fortunately this time the local
authority responded pretty promptly, and by 10am,
new tents are delivered to those in need.

The victims have not lost their
heart, but start all over again.

They have food delivered to them
by the government on a daily basis.

And crop seeds distributed to each
family.

On my way passing Jiangyou City, I
see donations by Chinese businesses quietly
placed at the front gate of every household.

When I return to Mianzhu City a
month after the quake, I find food and grocery
markets have been reopened, with the prices
similar to that in the Provencial capital city
Chengdu.

I see families working together to
repair damaged home.

Workers return to their companies
and factories to help rebuilding the business.

Masters at local building material
factories work in shifts to keep the production
line going 24 hours a day.
"I haven't been able to take
a break for three days and three nights, and
resembled windows for 1,000 households,"
says a proud factory worker.

A China Map
Created by Nature Thousands Years Ago
27/2/09

相传阴沉木为开辟以前之树,沉沙浪中,过天地翻覆劫数,重出世上,以故再入土中,万年不坏。其色深绿,纹如织锦。置一片于地,百步以外,蝇蚋不飞。
--
袁枚《子不语》
About ten
thousand years ago, there were great
forests in sub-tropical and warm areas of
China, like Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, where
trees were hundreds and even thousands of
years old. Then one day a massive natural
occurrence, such as earthquake, mountain
torrent, bushfire caused by lightning
strike, took place and buried an entire
forest under the earth, and the trees
eventually became ebony, an extremely
dense wood in black colour.
What's shown in
the pic is a black wood unearthed in
Yunnan, which is in the shape of the
China map.
