China:
Last Week Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited rural Dingxi in Guansu and shared potato meals with villagers during his time attending an international forum on how to bring forward China's backward west. Dingxi in Gansu Province is, arguably, THE poorest rural township in China. Although in recent years the peasant labours working in other parts of China have brought considerable wealth back home, still quite a sizable number of rural families there have an annual income less than 1,200 yuans per person. The vast western China includes the provinces of Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xizang (Tibet) and Xinjiang, and are historically the most backward region in China with thousands miles of barren land due to the lack of rains.
